Guide By Your Side? What do we do?

Guide By Your Side is a Hands & Voices program that embodies the strong value of direct parent to parent and family to family connections. We provide emotional support and unbiased information from trained Parent Guides to families with deaf and hard of hearing childrenand to the systems and professionals that serve them. We promote self efficacy by offering parents role models and hands-on help with advocating for themselves and their children and alleviating the isolation that can accompany raising a child with special needs.

Guide By Your Side connects parents in a supportive relationship with an experienced parent of a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. We work with the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program to contact parents when babies are referred through the Delaware Newborn Hearing Screening program. Our goal is to reach parents as soon as possible after a second hearing screen test suggests a possible hearing loss. This can be a difficult and confusing process for families, and a Parent Guide can answer questions, help interpret audiological information, shed some light on possible outcomes, encourage parents as they progress through the process, and just listen when that is what families need. Guides help families understand the unique needs of infants who are deaf or hard of hearing and provide unbiased information regarding communication options.

Throughout the process, guides maintain ethical standards and share resources and information in a comprehensive, equitable manner. Guides participate in ongoing training to actively develop their knowledge base and help families make informed decisions. By exploring our common bond, shared experiences, challenges, wisdom, and insight we are all able to become better parents for our deaf or hard of hearing children.

Guide By Your Side is a free program for Delaware families with deaf or hard of hearing children, however all Parent Guides do receive financial compensation for their time and effort. For more information please contact Angie Miller at or call or text (302)383-9890.
